Google to launch 3D interactive Internet visor
The latest from Google is a new revolutionary product called Google Goggles, an interactive screen that will present Internet content in three dimensions. This new product has been developed in cooperation with Israeli Mirage Innovations. Anyone using "Google Goggles" will be wrapped up in a 3D "stereo-vision" of the three dimensional nature of the interface.
The home page of this 3D interactive Internet visor a virtual room called "The Library". The library is lined with virtual books cataloged according to the Dewey system, where each book presents a knowledge resource within 3dLife. Clicking on a book will open the respective website within the frame of a virtual painting, hanging on the wall in the virtual library.
The main purpose of Google Goggles is to give users a three dimensional interface. An added advantage is that the Google Goggles may indeed function as a phone, but that is not their main purpose. With this new tool, Google's approach to online content delivery goes beyond what the present protocols for the World Wide Web can deliver. The only concern at the moment, as acknowledged by Google, is that some users may find this too complicated.
Keeping that in mind, a virtual librarian has been included to make it easier for searchers to find what they are looking for. The idea is to enhance and supplement the user friendly two dimensional Google Web home page, to make it more usable. Google clarifies that instead of being inspired from Microsoft's Ms Dewey, Google's librarian is a homage to author Neal Stephenson who invented the concept in his science fiction 'Snow Cash' in 1992. Stephenson's own online librarian was a computer generated avatar that helps people find what they are looking for. Similarly, Google's Goggles have an in-built microphone, which can be used to ask the Librarian your question, and the Librarian will interact with you as would any normal person. Google admits that the Beta version of this librarian is yet to be perfect, as it has problems understanding humor and sarcasm. That is being worked upon.
For the moment there is only one "skin" available for the Librarian, played by British actor Sir Ian Mckellen. Actors Rick Moranis and Joan Cusack have been approached for alternative skins. Later on, tailor made librarians may be developed for companies and PR campaigns. Also, AdWords will be included in frames on the Library wall. Companies may also pay to get objects representing their products within their library.
Outside the Library, there is a complete world in 3D, with buildings, shops, bars, parks and art. 3dLife represents a true three dimensional world, and not a flat-screen 2d version of it. Rumor has it that, to deal with all the traffic generated from searches, free Gmail accounts, Google Maps etc, Google is buying a large number of ripped down Playstation 3 consoles from Sony to connect them to the Google server park.
Google also wants the "Goggles" to be a fashion statement and has asked Prada to design a new high end version to be launched next year. The stereo ear buds attached to Google Goggles can be used to play music and movie sound tracks, and you can use the visor to watch regular You Tube clips and 3D versions of movies.
Google Goggles can also be of help on the streets. The built in GPS in the goggles will automatically download the relevant satellite images and maps from Google, which will be superimposed on your view of the street. For instance, if you look at a departmental store, you will be able to view the best bargains available, and so on.
Thus, Google Goggles are a great tool with great potential. If you have a Google ID, you can get an avatar or an alter ego in 3dLife too.
