Evaluation of Credit Card Processing Companies |
There are several credit card processing companies to choose from, each offering different features and fees. However, choosing a company to process your customer’s credit card payments can surely be a tough task.
Many banks will deny small business applications for merchant accounts as they would not want to take the risk. So, the small businesses end up going through third party providers who will very easily get the merchant account on your behalf but will also apply their own rate structure to your transactions for their own benefits.
If you are operating an online business, then a shopping cart program is a must to process the credit cards online. If you end up going with a third party shopping cart instead of a customized program, it may not work with all credit card processing gateways. You should ensure that the shopping cart you use on your web site works with the merchant account you choose to process customer payments.
You will have to pay the third party merchant account provider once you start accepting credit cards. The provider will charge you fees in exchange for the ability to accept credit card payments. The payment fees and rates vary depending on many factors like how long you have been in business, type of your business, your credit score and amount of monthly credit card sales and so on.
Along with a fee per transaction, some providers ask for annual fee too, while other providers only charge a percentage of each transaction processed. Usually, rates for small businesses accepting phone and mail order payments range from $0.10 to $0.30 along with 2 to 3% of the transaction amount. If the merchant account providers you are looking at is quoting a higher percentage, then it is advisable to check out a few other providers to see if you can get a lower rate before signing up.
Due to increasing competition, most of the providers have no application fees. But, if there is any application fee then, you need to know what the application fee is, how much you pay annually, how much you must spend on equipment needed to set up your account and maintaining a monthly minimum of sales volume is necessary or not.
Compare and understand the money withdrawal process of each account provider. That is, whether you can do it whenever you want or is there any specific times of the month or year to do that? What is the time taken to receive your funds once you’ve requested a withdrawal or transfer of the money? How are the charge backs handled and so on. It is always good to have in-depth knowledge of all the processes before finalizing an account provider.
Before signing anything make sure you read all the forms and contracts associated with merchant accounts. It is better to have a thorough understanding of cancellation terms and on what conditions the provider can terminate your account also.
