Accepting credit card payments plays an important role in ensuring the success of your online business. Most of the online transactions are done through credit card payments. Your business will be greatly affected if your website cannot accept credit card.

While it is true that people will still buy your products if you don't accept credit card payments, you will greatly enhance your chances of closing a sale by giving the customer the option of paying you through credit card.

I will show you how your website can still accept credit card even without a merchant account. It is a special banking account that enables you to process credit card payment from your customers.

Credit card payment involves a very simple process i.e. to transfer funds from the customers credit card account to the seller's bank account. The sequence is basically as follows:-

1. The customer goes to your site and decides to buy from you. He then enters the credit card details onto a SECURE ORDER FORM on a secure server (denotes as httpS://). The next stage is basic fraud avoidance like validating the card number and address verification etc.

2. Then, this information is transmitted through a payment GATEWAY to the Credit Card Association such as Visa or MasterCard. A GATEWAY is the mechanism that transfers your customer's credit card details to the processor so that you get paid.

3. Transaction is either authorized or declined depending on the state of the card, whether it has been stolen, or has exceeded its credit limit, available funds and other things it deems important before allowing transaction to go through. Are you going to do all by yourself or hire a full time employee to handle the refunding or leave it to a company that will handle all the hurdles and hassles of returning money to your dissatisfied customers?

On Going Fixed Fee

Most all internet merchant providers require a monthly fixed fee or "statement fee" as it is commonly named, which is simply another way to cover their costs and make money. You will be hard pressed to find a provider that does not require this type of fee on a monthly basis. However, do not choose an internet merchant account that requires more than $10 per month. Additionally, most internet merchant providers require a monthly minimum (usually $25). The bottom line is that you will be paying at least $25 per month (on top of the monthly statement fee) for your account.

Discount Rate

Usually, the discount rate will be between 2 and 4 percent. The discount rate is the sales commission the provider earns on each sale. For example, if the discount rate offered is 3%, and you receive a sale over your web site for $20, you will owe 60 cents to your internet merchant provider.

Fixed Transaction Fee

Usually between $0.20 and $0.30, the fixed transaction fee is the fixed fee portion of each sale. Unlike the discount rate, the fixed transaction fee is the same for every transaction. Whether you get a $1 sale or a $100 sale, the transaction fee will be the same.

Termination Fee

A bit more hidden in the small print, a termination fee can apply if you cancel your merchant account within a specified period of time (usually within one year). But beware, some merchant providers require a three year commitment!

Miscellaneous Fees

If a customer requests a refund and they want their credit card credited, an internet merchant provider will charge you a separate fee (usually between $10 - $20). Read the contract carefully, as other special fees may apply.

There are few intermediate parties involved in the transaction that takes place as soon as the customer places an order. The process seems long but it never takes more than a few minutes. All these parties play an important role during the transaction and the process cannot be just complete without everyone contributing their services.

Credit Card Processing: A Series of Secure Steps in Just a Few Minutes

The process seems a long one but it doesn't take more than a few minutes. The following steps will give you an overview of how a credit card works. Let's have a general idea of how it flows from the merchant account to the bank.

It begins with the customer initiating the process by placing an order using the credit card. This induces a merchant to send the transaction details to the merchant's payment gateway. The details include customers name, address, identification information and the amount of purchase. The payment gateway then checks the database to identify the acquiring bank and sends the information to the same bank's payment processor. Afterward, the payment processor identifies the issuing bank by examining customer's credit card number and other information. After processing a customers credit card the transaction goes through a series of complex stages. The money transferred through the merchant account is then deposited into the business's checking account within 2 to 3 business days.

Requirements:
